Day 5 in Greece - 2024

Caffeine Needed

I take the day off of work so that we can relax together on Jeremy's first full day in Greece this trip. We both sleep in until 11:00, and then we get up and move to the living room bed where Jeremy sleeps some more. Yeah, there's a living room bed. There's no couch. There's a bed in the bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen, a dining table and four chairs, another bed in the living room, and one sleeper chair.

We are determined not to sleep the day away, but are struggling, so we leave the apartment to go on a walk. We stop at a place called Vanilla to order a καφές (coffee). Jeremy orders a freddo (cold) cappuccino, and I get a hot one.

A Palestinian flag waves against a backdrop of apartment buildings with protest signs and banners visible.

Roman Agora Park

We keep walking and end up at the Roman Agora Park. We sit on a bench and finish our coffees. The park is also referred to as the Roman Forum of Thessaloniki. We walk around the historic site, counting how many stray cats we see perusing the place (seven, by the way). There's definitely old bathrooms in the corners. I can't imagine sitting on the toilet, sitting next to and facing other people also using the toilet. No, thank you!

There's an old filled in well on the property in the larger grassy area, and you can tell where the stage used to be and some seating. It's very cool to see.

Ancient Roman columns and ruins stand in front of modern apartment buildings in a bustling urban area.
Ancient stone archways and ruins of a historic fortress wall stretch across a green landscape in daylight.

Aristotelous Park

We cross the street to Aristotelous Park and Playground, and just walk around. We are enjoying the sunshine, the weather, and, honestly, a bit of Pokémon Go. We spend a few hours just relaxing here before returning to the apartment.

A bare winter tree stands in an urban plaza with buildings and palm trees visible in the warm evening light.

Planning

We get back to our apartment and plan out the next week of travel. We plan on tackling as many of the islands as we can without rushing through them. We are going to go to Crete, Santorini, and Mykonos.

We make chicken Caesar salad for dinner, and watch 101 Dalmatians whilst playing table-top games for the remainder of the evening. At some point, late in the night, we get hungry again. The gyro place we found before is still open, so we walk down and get food before calling it a night.
